Some veterinary health tips for new (and old) Villagers
Allergies, alla, Arkansas. Now that the first peek of Fall has come and gone (that 2 days below 50 degrees weather), it is time for a primer for you new Villagers and a reminder for native Villagers concerning the ever-present allergens here in the Village. This semi-tropical wilderness that we all love so much does come with some trade-offs.

Pollen
and PPM: There are pollens and other little secretions from the rich
plant life produced here all year. The spring, Summer, Fall and Winter
pollens are simply produced for those particular natural reasons of that time
of the year. The change of foliage that is just beginning will also
produce a lot of fine particulate matter as the leaves dry and fall from the
trees. The ground cover that is always in various degrees of
decomposition and decay is also more exposed to wind and more readily blown
into the air. If you and your Friends have been here more than one Fall
season, then you will react in typical allergy fashion to these now-familiar
particles as you are now sensitized. 
Bugs:
There are fewer bugs and other crawly critters out in these cooler months.
Most of them have not left. They are simply resting up for Spring!
Many of them will try to enter your nice, warm houses for the winter.
Periodic spraying with Permethrin or treatment by the pest control companies
should handle this. Since there is little farming around here, we will
not get the benefit of harvest-produced particulate matter. Construction
and the perpetual work on the existing and new golf courses will not stir much
up. They are watered frequently. This current dry spell will waft
a lot of matter into the air. However, some Fall rain (instead of snow)
will take care of that. 
Wheat:
This grain, in its many forms in dog foods, contributes to itching. True food
allergies result in bloody diarrhea in a matter of minutes. So food that
does not contain wheat gluten does not make your Friend itch. However,
an allergy-prone doggy Friend will itch quicker if fed gluten since he/she is
already "primed" with airborne particulate matter.
