Dental Heath - the Doorway

to Your Pet's Heart

Dr. Bob performs dental cleanings under a light sedative and an injectable muscle sedative.  Your Friend will not be given a general anesthetic (put under).   The scaling and polishing are done by hand.  There are no loud noises.

Hand scaling prevents the etching of teeth and/or burning of the enamel or the gums.  Your Friend does not swallow any debris from the cleaning because running water is not used.  Recovery is uneventful simply because your Friend is not under anesthetic.  Pain medicine is always included and is given by injection so your Friend does not have to take medicine by mouth when you go home.  All dental patients are connected to an EKG and monitor during the procedure.

Dr. Bob has all dental patients take "Rebound", a flavored electrolyte as soon as possible after the cleaning to prevent dehydration and get them "back on their paws".  Whenever any teeth have to be pulled (extracted) your Friend is given a local anesthetic block similar to what your dentist does for you to prevent pain.  Once the teeth are polished, a plaque protectant is applied to form a temporary barrier to plaque.  A respiratory stimulant is then given to quickly metabolize the sedative.  Any leftover effect of the sedative provides additional pain reduction from the dental cleaning or any extractions.

A home kit is also available for plaque prevention called "Orovet" which you can use instead of brushing, which can be very difficult.

Dental health is the first and last step to total health and a long life for your Friend.  The most common diseases seen by Dr. Bob in older doggies and kitties are liver abscesses and heart disease related to infected teeth.

It is amazing how much pain your Friend can stand with bad teeth, but remember:  Pain is NOT necessary!
