"After the Fight" ~ Emergency First Aid at Home

Cuts, bites, and scratches.  Clean the wounds with soap and water unless there is a hole into a body cavity. If there is a puncture, cover it and seal it.  Apply a clean cloth or paper towels over  wounds to stop bleeding. Wrap around the body with cloth or bandages  . Call your veterinarian for guidance or a visit. Small scratches and cuts can be cleaned and disinfected with hydrogen peroxide and rubbing alcohol. Follow up with an antibiotic ointment. Cuts and scratches will heal normally within ten days or less. Protect wounds from scratching, licking, or biting by your pet.

How to tell if the injury is serious.

1) Rapid or shallow breathing; panting or barely breathing at all-Check for an injured airway or damage to the mouth

(Be careful. Your pet may bite you from pain or fear).

2) Pale gums.

3) Unable to recognize you or come to you.

4) Trembling or limp.

5)Temp below 100F or above 104F (if you have a rectal thermometer).

6) Slobbering

7) Bleeding from ears, nose or genital parts. Slow bleeding is generally from the veins and can be easily stopped by pressure.  Pulsing or squirting bright red blood is from the arteries and requires a compression bandage over the bleeding site, until you reach your veterinarians’ office.

8) Broken, dislocated bones; Look over the surface of your pet for any possible breaks or bones sticking out of the skin. Try to isolate the injured area and keep your pet from struggling until you go to your veterinarian .

The three cardinal rules for emergency first aid : Stabilize, immobilize, and transport. Wrapping your Friend in blankets or bath towels is a good idea. The wounds or cuts are contaminated already. Simply use clean cloths or blankets. Shock: This condition is the result of a reduced volume of blood flowing through the veins and arteries of the body. The gums in the mouth will be pale. If you see this, hurry to a vet. You can wrap your friend in a blanket to conserve body heat. Call for help and advice if you can.

Give your Friends a hug for me!
